Semarang is a city on the north coast of the island of Java, Indonesia - an excellent gateway to the magical mountainous interior of Central Java and only some 60 miles away from world-famous Borobudur, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s largest Buddhist monument! Possible complimentary shore excursions include a tour to Borobudur, on which you can discover this ancient site, before a buffet lunch of Indonesian specialties, a traditional Javan performance and a visit to a workshop where batik and silver jewellery are handcrafted. Instead, you may choose to explore the city of Semarang on a guided tour, ride a vintage steam-powered train through the lush rolling hills of central Java or visit a coffee plantation to learn more about how the Dutch introduced coffee to Java in the 1600s.

Your next stop, Surabaya, is also on the island of Java. From here, you can discover a diverse world of historical wonders – from Buddhist temples to Arab quarters. Marvel at an array of architectural styles through the many neighbourhoods, visit the glorious Grand Mosque, or tour a traditional cigarette factory, where the fastest workers here rolled out 325 cigarettes an hour. There’s plenty to do in the city centre too, whether you’re a history buff, a relentless shopper or an intrepid foodie.
Beautiful Bali is your next stop, an island known for its serenity, spirituality and stunning scenery. There’s a variety of choice when it comes to excursions in this land of rice terraces, spectacular volcanoes and over 20,000 temples. Enjoy an afternoon and evening at the ethical Elephant Safari Park in Ubud, feeding these incredible animals and learning more about their conservation. You may prefer to visit historic temples, watch traditional Balinese dance performances, learn more about rice farming in the island’s enchanting interiors, or watch as artisans produce batik cloth, intricate jewellery and wooden carvings. This unique tropical island is home to the Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders, whose culture is rich in the arts and whose lifestyle has evolved from the sea and its abundance of wildlife. You can be treated to an authentic dance performance by local islanders, soar above the island-dotted sea by helicopter, visit the Thursday Island Cemetery where hundreds of Japanese pearl divers are buried, or take the ferry to nearby Horn Island to explore its restored World War II air base and learn more about the island’s fascinating military history.

Charming Cairns is your next stop, from which you can enjoy yet more eye-opening excursions. Admire lush Aussie flora as you stroll through the city’s botanic gardens, drive by the northern beaches and spend awhile perusing the chic boutiques and cafés of Palm Cove, meet the colourful winged residents of the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, or watch indigenous dancers perform a fascinating live show at the rainforest amphitheatre. Foodies can head inland through luxuriant rainforest and the rolling foothills of the Kuranda Range to visit a coffee plantation, award-winning distillery and famed dairy, before a cruise across a crater lake, during which you may spot pelicans, water dragons, saw-shelled turtles and even pythons basking in the sun.
The Whitsundays are all about stunning scenery and mesmerising marine life.
